just put it in for the 1st time this year and forward gear engages in neutral and reverse-there is no difference where you put the throttle-its always in forward gear and will start that way-HELP?
 
Unhook the linkage.
Shift it by hand.
Motor OFF!!! Shift by hand and turn prop both ways and see if that works.
That OK maybe the shifter is bad or the cables are bad.
That not ok, check the lower for water or metal in the lower.
 
Jerry-disconnected the linkage underneath the engine and the shift rod isn't connected to anything inside the lower unit-you can move it up and down freely--could this be a simple fix?
