Tohatsu 8hp gear box installation

I removed the propeller and pulled out the gear head. After reinstalling, the unit stays engaged. Shifting to neutral has no effect. How to I reinstall the lower gear head so I can shift normally?

OK, so M8B... You probably dropped the push rod inside the gear case. Pop the prop shaft housing out and see that the rod is in the end of the shaft, to engage the shift cam.
 
Yes, that's right Paul. The push rod came out along with the spring lock(?). Didn't see them in there until I re-drained the gear lube. Do you know the torque spec for the two 10mm gear housing cover plate bolts?
 
We snug them down, and use blue (removable) lock-tite on the threads. No torque wrench. Don't over-tighten, there's no gasket -- it's just metal to metal, so maybe 10 or 15 foot pounds at most. If the threads are clean and dry, and you use lock-tite, you should be fine.
