I thought about that question 30 years ago and used a coating from a machine shop that was used to coat machined threads on bolts so they wouldn't get damaged in shipping. I can't remember what the material was called but if you can find a machine shop they would know what it is. All I remember was it dried like a plastic coating.
By the way the springs will last forever . It's the metal fittings that hold the springs together that will go first.
