Ok I have an 85 bayliner capri with a 5.0 with the stern drive ball gear system not sure if its been doing it since I got it but I notice a rattling sound from the stern when its in neutral and in the up position. If the stern is down you don't hear it at all. Strange but something is a miss.

The engine should never be running with the sterndrive anywhere but fully down. Tilting the drive via the dash mounted tilt switch is for trailering the boat only and you should tilt it after shutting the engine off. You will ruin the ball gears and eventually destroy your upper gearbox if you run the engine with the sterndrive tilted up.

Your trim system is a completely separate system that uses hydraulic rams as front engine mounts. The thumb-switch on the shifter is the control for trim, and should trim the entire engine and drive allowing you to leave the drive full down in relation to the intermediate so the ball gears will be properly meshed.
