Mercruiser 5.0 runs great for most of the day then sputter and dies

It will barely run at a slow snail craw back to the ramp. I just bought the boat yesterday and it ran great on the test drive. I'm not a mechanic and have no idea what most of the items are on the boat. I've tried to research the fix but I've yet to find an answer. Any thoughts?
 
So, you just bought it and it passed a water test .I suspect you stirred up some sediment and plugged up the fuel filters if you mean the motor barely runs.If you mean you can make rpm`S in gear and not go anywhere that something different.Anything from a prop hub slipping to the upper gears melting from lack of oil.Was a full routine service done prior to launch? Or was it just a giddyup and go?
