keep me from pulling out my spark plug wires!

I am totally new to Mercury outboards and I need some one to save me from being stupid. I have a 2004 50hp 2 stroke, and the top spark plug wire came out of the CDM. The end of the wire just looks blunt, like it was cut, and when I look in the hole on the CDM there's a tapered screw. Do the wires screw into the CDM, or is there a plug stuck in there? Are the spark plug wires integrated into the CDM?
 
That method if retaining the wires on the cap is the BEST ever devised! Many a car race has been lost when a wire popped out of distributor cap.
