1990 J6RESR drive shaft removal

3 bolts and the lower unit comes off.----Remove the pump housing to replace the impeller.----No need to worry about disconnecting a shift linkage.

The driveshaft should come down and out with the lower unit !------Is this a salt water motor ?-------When was lower unit off last for a new impeller?

There should be no problem in removing this assembly.----Driveshaft should just slide out of the crankshaft as lower unit comes off.

according to repair manual rotate propeller shaft slowly by hand while shifting to forward, and removing the three bolts securing lower unit allows lower unit to drop down with drive shaft and shift selector shaft attached, but the drive shaft remains attached to power head making water pump installation impossible.

If the driveshaft stayed in the crankshaft you need to remove that driveshaft !-----Assemble the lower unit with new impeller and then re-install the whole works as an assembly.

Post #10 is confusing to me !!!------You need to pull the driveshaft out of the crankshaft if it is stuck !!-----Then assemble as per a factory manual .-Then re-install the complete lower unit.
