Exhaust Muffler Lifespan

I've got a 2004 Pursuit with a pair of 6.0 L crusaders. I have noticed that the engines seem to have gotten louder over the past few years. Anybody have any experience with mufflers, specifically about how long they last.

I would check the whole exhaust system for leaks. We don't want to take any chances with CO poisoning. Could also be a reduction in cooling water. Not enough to cause overheating, less water in the muffler would make it nosier. A broken/missing baffle inside the muffler. I had one fiberglass muffler that was causing a vibration or buzzing at idle that drove me nuts. Found a baffle was loose.I was able to break it off inside the muffler. They seem to be glassed in. That engine is louder than the other one now, but the vibration is gone.

I've heard about baffles inside the mufflers eroding away over time.

I'm with Lou - reduction in cooling water = louder exhaust...

The salisbury rubber mufflers in our boat are close to three decades old...with no performance issues...even after a few overheating issues...

I've used them myself on thru-hull exhaust, they worked great!
