1961 RDS 23 water pump impeller

In which direction should the vanes on the impeller point. Toward the direction of the rotation of the crankshaft or the opposite way? Replaced the old one and installed a new impeller with the vanes in the opposite way, (sweeping), the way the old one was. Took the boat out and ran great for a few minutes but stalled out. Checked the water discharge port and very little water was being discharged. Got home and poured water through the thermostat housing to check for any blockage and water ran out the side and bottom intakes. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The correct way to install an impeller.----------Put impeller on the shaft.---Make sure the key is in place and driving the impeller.------------Lower pump housing onto the impeller while rotating the driveshaft.-------------Rotate the driveshaft in the direction the motor turns.
