I'm installing a seastar hydraulic steering unit on a 2005 198 dlx carolina skiff. I decided to hard pipe from the helm to back deck. How long should my flex lines be ?

This question might be better answered in the Steering Forum http://www.marineengine.com/boat-forum/forumdisplay.php?1018-Boat-Steering-and-Engine-Controls

That being said, the length of the cables are determined by where your piping is located relative to the steering assembly connections.

The standard cylinder has the connections facing the port side of the boat. If the hoses will be coming from the starboard side, you will need to make sure that they go past the cylinder and loop back to allow proper flex when the motor is turned from side to side.

You can reorient the connections, but you must take them all the way out of the cylinder, reseal with teflon sealant (not tape) and torque properly.
