Delco Remy EST distributor timing

I've read a lot on the net about adjusting the timing on my 454/350 engines equipped with the Delco Remy EST distributor but there is one thing I don't quite understand. If I'm checking total advance timing at say 3000 rpm I don't need the shunt installed but I can read it in the normal manner with an advancing timing light. Am I correct on this? Some people say I need the shunt installed but I thought that was to get the initial advance of 8-10 degrees.

Correct. The shunt just pulls the advance back to its lowest setting so you can check it at idle.

Not sure only 3,000 rpms will be enough to ensure the advance is all the way in. You might need to go to 4,000.
