1979 80 hp mariner shift linkage

Does anybody know the easiest way to disconnect the shift linkage to be able to remove the lower unit to change out the water pump. Thanks

There is nothing to disconnect !---The shift shaft is splined.

Thanks. I have dealt with Johnsons before and I had to disconnect the rod at the motor, which was aggravating.
