fuel mixture for a 1986 40 HP Mariner?

Hi Steve, I have a 60HP and a friend has a 40HP and we both mix 50:1. You get a little smoke on start up and that's desireable. NO smoke at start up, re-check your mixture.
 
Hi. I have an 1986 40 hp mariner. The engin lost power after about 20 min run on the sea, i checked the fuel filters and cleaned the carb,s then took it out to sea again this time it ran longer without power lost but after an hour it started to lost power again. would you please give me advise of what is going on with the motor.
