A Maxum is but 1 step above a Bayliner,....

Merc Alphas are Ok,...
Merc Bravos are Great,...

Volvos are Solid drives,...

If it says OMC, Run as far, 'n fast as ya can....

As for motors, ya can't go wrong with Chevy based power,.... Ford left the Marine biz in the mid-90s,...

If ya don't know nothin' 'bout Boats,....
Find a friend that does,... preferably a Handy kinda friend, that Really knows ole boats,...
 
I agree with Bondo on the drives. Personally I rate the Volvo drives the best because of their high reliability. However, like all Volvo machinery, pats are expensive.
