Hi Guys!
Yesterday I drained and refilled my outdrive with HP Mercury Gear Oil. (I do this three times year) I am wondering can I use an "O" Ring
instead of the flat gasket? I always have to use a dental pick to dig the pieces of the flat gasket out. The O rings say for Mercruiser Lower Units.
By the way my boat is kept on a Float-Lift and I used the Mighty Vac Pump Extractor it worked Perfectly! I just used a Barbed connector to connect the fill hose that screws into the unit.

Thanks!
Rick

No

If it came with a flat gasket you must reuse the flat gasket.

The o-ring will fail after compression.......don't ask!!

If it has the proper undercut for an o-ring then it is ok to use one.

Also there are a few unofficial rumors floating around the Mercruiser world that the vacuum created by the prop/s could suck oil out past the o-ring but not the gasket.
