Tohatsu Shift Linkage Mistake

Hello, I have a 1996 Tohatsu M70B (70 Horse) Outboard. I was going to change the impeller and when I removed the lower unit I forgot to disconect the shift linkage and the whole linkage came out of the lower unit. (still conected to the upper unit) Will i be able to just slide it back into the lower unit when I am done with the impeller change? Thanks in advance for the help. Happyfin
 
Probably. The cam must ride ahead of the push rod. May require some finesse. All else fails, pull the prop shaft housing, reinsert the cam, and then reinsert the prop shaft housing.
