1990's mariner (I think) year help!?!?!?!

Hello, I have a merc mariner 8hp that I belive is late 90's but thats all I really know about it right now, I have tryed the S/N all over the web but have not had any luck, so if anyone has a clue as to the year, that woud be great! Thanks, Jack :)

The reason for this is that you need to take a very close look at the serial # on this motor.--------The second place in the numbers is usually a letter and not a number. -May or may not be altered at some time.
