Interceptor 292 Dearbomatic Oil Cooler Question

I have a 1958 Century Resorter equipped with a 185 HP Interceptor with an early Dearbomatic and 10 deg reduction gear. I have had the boat for about 25 years. It was quite a mess when I bought it. It had what appeared to me to be a add on oil cooler for the transmission which picked up water prior to the pump via a "double T" in the raw water line. I never thought that it was possible to get much, if any water flow in this configuration.

I currently have the engine out (to replace a corroded front cover and few other things) and I was thinking of eliminating the oil cooler. Did the early Dearbomatics (the ones which shared the engine oil) normally come equipped with oil coolers? Can I safely delete mine? The plumbing is awkward and is another source for potential leaks. The later Y-Block Interceptors appear to have had a nice oil cooler attached to the front cover with hard lines to the transmission. I can see how this routing would have reasonable flow. Any advice is appreciated.
