trying to help a fellow boater out motor swap

this guy needs to change out his motor because the one he has now has a cracked block. right now he has a 3.0 l mercuriser . its in a 88 thundercrafr 19.5 ft. we have lots of room for a v8 but i think 3.4 would be more than enough. so the question is if we go with a 3.4 l merc will the bellhouseing match ? it is an alpha 1 outdrive . can any one give me an insite on this . we would like to get him back on the water this spring. thanks..
 
Are you thinking the 4.3L V-6???

You may need to change the gears in the upper drive, too...and the prop...

Ayuh,.... Ya mean a 470,..?? 3.7l,..?? Merc's redheaded bastard step-child they're Forgotten,..??

Don't even Think 'bout it,....

It's either another 3.0l, or the 4.3l, V6 already mentioned,....
