Hi,

Our speedometer is not working & we have had it serviced. They told us there is a small hole on the leg of the motor that may be blocked. Can you tell me how to clean this and how far up it goes. When I insert a piece of wire in the hole it only went in approximately 5mm. Could you please advise us on how to clean this & whether it could be the problem.

Kind regards

They always get clogged up and are difficult to clear. Consider installing an external pitot tube type pickup on your lower transom and connecting that to the pitot tube coming from your engine. Then plug the piece of pitot tube that goes to the pick up on the front of your engine. It's very easy to do and easy to replace the external pickup if it fails sometime down the road.

Take a small drill bit and rotate it by hand into the hole. It should go in about 20 mm before the passage makes a right angle turn up. You could use the bit in a drill, but if not careful, you could drill a hole right into the gearcase.

If you can not get it clear or do not want to keep cleaning it out, do as Chawk suggests and install a separate pitot tube on the transom.
