Can I add a temp guage or alarm or any other temp warning to a 1982 2cyl Merc outboard ?

A temp gauge can be added. Not aware of an "OEM, direct fit kit" but you only need a temp sensor and a gauge.

A basic temp sensor "screws in" to the block - there is usually a few "unused" holes on the block - might have to be tapped or enlarged and re-tapped, but certainly can be done. These work on simple resistance. As the temp goes up, the resistance goes down and the (signal) is tracked by a temp gauge (powered with a spare/accessory line at the dash).

You could get fancy and pick up a temp alarm (alarm module/horn), with all the bits/pieces you would need and rig it up, but you are looking at serious bucks unless you can scavenge one off a donor engine.

You have a " black motor " but you might want to look under accessories for Johnson and Evinrude and see if a temperature gauge and sending unit is offered by them.----It could certainly be fitted to a Mercury motor.----The other option is a water pressure gauge that can be plumbed into your motor.

A guy on the Mercury/Mariner engine repair forum at the iboats site just finished installing one. He has pics and quite a bit of detail.

Not running you over there, but facts are facts.
