Have a cracked lower unit on a 1989 85hp Force. Motor wouldn't shift out of forward. I have found a 1988 Force 125, can I swap the lower units? Should that fix the shifting problem? Also when i read about replacing the water pump it said I need a special tool to install the seal. If that true? I have changed pumps on small motors but never one this big. Thank you.

If the driveshaft is the same length it will work.
It has a different gear ratio but with a different prop it will work.
The pump seal it really doesn't need special tools. The factory or a repair shop will have the tools.
I just use a socket and a press.
Most time the seal won't need to be replaced unless it destroyed???
Pics of the parts??

OK I will go with a direct swap of units. I asked about the water pump because on my small motors I replace them quickly with no special tools. I have no reason to believe that the water pump from the donor is damaged but I would think I could put in a new impeller while it is off.

Go for a ride and see what the rpm's are.
Then go with the prop that gives the best performance.
The motor should run about 52-5500 at WOT.
Any less and you can hurt your gas mileage.
I tried to change to a different prop.From a 17 to a 19.
My fuel economy went down about 20-25%
