Mercury 225 EFI 4 Stroke starting issues

Mercury 225 EFI 4 stroke will not crank over even with brand new battery. The engine cranks for split second but not enough to start motor. Thought it was the battery having low charge so replaced with new battery. Still would not crank the engine enough to start. Acts like dead battery still. All wires were cleaned at battery. Connected the engine wires only on new battery and still acts as if the battery is weak. Get half crank and then nothing.

What else can it be.

It could be the wiring between the battery and the solenoid - a bad solenoid - a bad starter - a bad ground on the starter - a short in the key switch - a short in the harness between the motor and the keyswitch - a short in the harness between the connector at the motor and the solenoid....

I could keep going.

Grab a manual and a multi-meter and start checking or take her into the shop and have it looked at..

Save some time and jumper the top large studs on the solenoid...if the engine cranks fast replace the solenoid.

I tried to crank again and noticed the starter would not disengage. Moved the fly wheel by hand and tried one more time and the starter smoked. Are the aftermarket starters any good.

Yep - the OEM ones are built by one of the aftermarket companies (don't know exactly which) - Merc doesn't build their own starters...
