" looked at an older 15 foot v-hull boat with a Johnson 35 on the back. Put the motor in a garbage can in the guy's back yard and it did start, but no water came out the exhaust hole. .. hmm .. water pump bad?

Guy said it was about 30 years old .. but it looks like Johnson didn't make 35's between 1959 and the mid 70's ... so this thing is more like 42+ years old.
Question:
How scared should I be of this thing? Would it be worth the $500 (boat -- in Ok shape + trailer + motor) that he's asking for it?
I'm going to have it looked at by a mechanic ... anyone have suggestions near Schenectady, New York?
