84 alpha shift cable

working on a 84 alpha outdrive. replaced impeller . when i test drove boat i had shifting issues. it would not go in neutral unless i switched motor off. it has no reverse. after getting back home and inspecting cables. i noticed that the cable end had pulled from the gimbal ( this is where it connects to engine). looked at parts list on www. it doesn't show a close up of the cable end. there are 2 set screws that hold the cable to the gimbal . should there be something else there to hold cable from pulling put. also, the shift linkage going from out drive to lower unit is not centered. i am assuming this was the cause of my problems to begin with. how do you adjust this to center ? what is the proper sequence for pulling lower unit (in forward,neutral,or reverse).i need to pull lower unit, position shift linkage to center position then reinstall ? thanks david
