Boat won't go when in gear.

When I put my boat into gear and give it throttle it only goes 5mph. Even when I open the throttle all the way. If I take it out of gear it revs with no problem. What could this be?
 
as far as we know from that, it could be a canoe with a trolling motor that is only supposed to go 5 mph...

whatcha workin' on? engine model, drive model, a bit of history - problem developed all of the sudden, or got gradually worse, new to you boat etc....
 
Yea, that might help. It's a 1986 Galaxie 20ft open bow with a 5.7 litre OMC Cobra. It ran perfectly fine the week before. I had a friend install a 12volt adapter, could that have something to do with it. It's runs perfectly fine until you put it in gear
 
Prop spun maybe, scratch a line thru the center and run it in the water if the line doesn't match up it's the prop, pray that it's the problem cause if it isn't the coupler went.
