Problem after installing new impeller in 90hp Yamaha

" Help please. I installed a new impeller in my 1988 Yamaha 90hp. When trying to mate the lower unit to the intermediate housing I can not get the lower shift rod to mate with the upper shift rod gear, I have tryed it in reverse, neutral,and forward. I followed the directions in my manual but it seems to not cover the 90 hp. very well. any help will certainly be appreciated.

I got in touch with a Yamaha service guy and he told me the lower unit probably was knocked out of reverse, he said to take a pair of pliers and very carefully turn the shift rod on the lower unit to get it in reverse,,,,,,sure enough it worked and everything lined up fine. Just wanted to help anyone who might have the same problem.

" I HAVE A 70-MERCURY AND I PUT A NEW WATER PUMP KIT IN IT BECAUSE IT WAS LEAKING VERY BADLY. THE PROBLEM I AM HAVING IS WHEN I PUT THE LOWER UNIT INTO NETURAL AND CONTROL, WHEN I SHIFT INTO FORWARD GEAR IT WILL NOT ENGAGE. NETURAL WORKS GOOD, REVERSE WORKS GOOD. "
