Transom repair

last winter, a tree branch ripped my boat cover, falling on the top of my transom.
its a 14 ft. fibergalss boat with a fibergalss laminated, wood core transom.
the top surfece of the wood laminate was danaged by water. and i let it dry.
i injected construction adhesive to fill the cavities, and clamped the area.
i plan to mount a 9.9 outboard and im thinking of adding a 1/4" aluminum plate on either side of the transom to "sandwich" it for stability to the transom.
is it necessary, and can anyone think of a better way.
and if i use the aluminum plate, im thinking of flat head stainless screws, sealed with silicone, with washers and nuts on the inside.

thanks, Rick
