I have a 1967 starcraft islander with a 120 mercruiser. I have a problem with the lower unit locking down in place, in reverse the prop comes out of the water. When we adjusted the linkage we got it to lock in place but we lost the forward shift all together. Is there anybody out there that has worked on these old boats

Ayuh,.... My 1st guess is yer lower shift cable is worn/ stretched out,...

Replacin' it, will probably fix yer reverse lock problem,...

The actual lockin' is done by the valve on the transom,...

The lower shift cable is out in the open but where does it go into the back? I have a decent book on it but it don't go into detail very well on that sort of stuff.

I went out and looked at the lower shift cable. Can that be changed with the sterndrive on or do you have to pull it?

Ayuh,.... The drive is pulled, 'n the gimbel housin'/ bell housin' needs to be pulled off, or to the side...

It's all in the manual BD posted the link too....
