Throttle Cable help

I have a 1972 100hp Johnson 100ESL72R. My question is the throttle cable seems to have some play in it when you engage the throttle lever. There is probably almost a half inch to an inch before the motor starts to actually throttle up. Best I can remember its always been that way since my grandpas had the boat. I didnt know if there would be a easy way to maybe tighten it up a little bit. Or if it is even a good idea. The motor seems to run great still I know my grandpa always took good care of it. It sat for about 4 yrs I recently went down and changed out the LU oil and greased it up checked the plugs changed out the fuel and ran some cleaner through it. It tarted right up and idled just as well as it always did. It does go in to gear right away when you engage it it just has play in it before it actually builds rpm's. I am not a big motor/mechanic kind of person im just kind of learning as I go so keep that in mind with any responses. Thanks
Tony
