Does it do the same in reverse as forward?

Have you checked the gear lube for any metal fragments?

Have you had the lower unit off recently and maybe did not adjust the shift shaft correctly?

Do you hear ratcheting? Or does the motor just increase in rpm without moving any faster?

Many questions.....no answers......yet.
