'86 70 HP 2 stroke Gear Box problem

Have a 70 ETLJ and experiencing problems with forward gear. Operates fine in reverse but when placed in drive prop lurches then fails to spin. Motor runs fine and would like advice on potential diagnosis and repair options.
Haven't had luck finding an archived post on this topic. Thanks for any help.
 
Could be a gear cable/shift adjustment, or could be a blown gear. Have you drained the gear case oil to check for water contamination and metal particles?

Will do so now.

Gear shift cable adjustment will be done under the "hood", correct?

If the gear is blown is it worth rebuild or do you suggest purchase of a new unit?
