mercuriser engine stalls as i put it in gear

Hi
my chapperall 1997 mercruiser v6 alpha 1 drive needs help
over the winter I changed the pump impeller and the lower unit lube . i started engine in the driveway after sitting since nov , started and ran perfectly. put in the lake /it stalls when i try to put it in gear.forward or reverse, as if a switch is shuting off electric.? boat has run perfect since i bought it in 2009 Help
 
Check the operation of the shift interrupt switch. It momentarily kills the ignition when shifting out of gear. Make sure it isn't stuck in the notch on the cam.
 
did you overheat last year, is that the reason for the impeller change? If yes,you may have melted/fused the shift cable where is passes near the exaust Y pipe.
can you describe every step you took installing the lower unit.If you didnt get the splines lines up just right and/or used the nuts to pull the drive together
you may have jammed up the shift shaft to where it will not turn.
