Mercruiser 4 Cyl.

I have a 4 cyl Mercruiser around the 79-80 vintage in my boat. When I bought the package there were no numbers stampeded on the block or any tags attached.

My question is, do these engines require springs and weights in the distributor. Mine came with nothing but the points, condenser, and rotor inside the distributor, nothing below the breaker plate.

My thoughts exactly I've had it out a few times, when there's no ice, and it seems slow to plane. It's in a 17' deep V and I can only get 18mph gps on it.

You may be thinking of the automotive ignition system, whereby the flyweight system is easily visible from above.

Assuming that this is the Merc 470 engine......... the unit that Kghost shows you, has the cover removed.
Here's the same unit with the cover still in place.

Again, assuming that this is the Merc 470..... See page #7 here for your 470 ignition timing specs.

Be sure that once you set BASE advance, that you also check to see what the progressive and total advance are doing as per the above curve.
