cannot engage gear

I have a 1980 4 hp Chrysler 42 HOG I cannot get it into gear the lever moves up an down but now go,could I attempt repair myself.It was OK last year

Yes try taking the lower unit off and check the linkage clamp. boats . net has parts diagrams, Go there and look up your pictures. Replace the impeller while you have it apart.J
