Zincs in heat exchanger breaking off.

The zincs in my 225 Lehams heat exchanger keep breaking off from the nut when I go to turn them out for inspection. How can I prevent this and also is there a way to remove the zinc part once it happens. It is broken off flush so can't get vise grips on. Thanks,
Eric H.

As to why the zincs are breaking off, probably build-up around the opening.Take your light, and probably your mirror, and check to see if the opening is clear.Removing the broken-off zinc can usually be done by grinding the threads (outer threads that is) off the "plug" you removed with no zinc attached. Simply screw in the remaining inner thread into the zinc and remove.I generally try to get the lodged zinc to turn a partial rotation then extract with pliers.
