How reverse anti lock works

Hi, can anyone tell me how the reverse anti lock solenoid works on my 1979 Mercury black max power trim assembly? All I really need to know is if it stops the motors from running or simply lets the oil by-pass the pump? I have a problem and need to make sure it's not something small like a stuck reverse anti lock solenoid before I spend money on having the pump rebuilt. Thanks for any assistance.

When you shift into reverse the microswitch in control box sends power to the reverse lock solenoid. The solenoid blocks fluid flow in valve body to keep motor from trimming up in a powered reverse situation. it will not affect the trim motor from running, the trim limit switch controls this.
