I picked this up for $60 the other day for spare parts if I ever need them. So far I have discovered a crack in the housing and the upper seal of the swivel bearing retainer needs to be replaced.
I would like to take this unit apart to see what the condition is of the gears as that is mainly why I bought it. Ultimately I would like to completely restore this unit(weld/braze crack, reseal, strip and paint, etc.) so if I ever have issues with my lower I can just swap this one over. It does shift in and out of gear just fine and I flushed out the unit real well and didnt get any metal shavings or anything like that.
My question is, can I take out the driveshaft just by removing the set screw or is there more to it than that? I know I need a puller to remove the bearing housing and seal assembly that the prop shaft goes through. Basically Im just looking for a brief step by step and any special tools I may need to do this job.
Here are some pics of the unit:
Also, it looks like my best option for repairing the crack would be the HTS-2000 aluminum brazing rods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSzpmP_vCE4
Has anyone ever used these?
