'74 OMC 120 outdrive has broken the drive shaft twice now while cruising at 3500RPM

I don't want to replace the drive shaft again until I find out why it keeps breaking. I suspect that both forward and reverse gears are being energized at the same time, snapping the shaft. I thought the first time was because of the wire shorting along its path somewhere. I replaced the entire lower unit with a known good one with clean, correct "C" oil in it, and it came with its own cable. It worked fine for a day or two until I had the boat up to full speed when it broke the shaft again. Should I be looking at a short in the shift switch located in the shifter? I've heard they can go bad, but never heard of them engaging both directions at once. Any advice?
