We were cruising at a low speed in our dinghy. I had not used the motor for a year but it started first pull. The engine quit, was really hot. Started up but noticed no water stream and it immediately quit again.
 
You may be overheating. Check the telltale for blockage. If none, plan on a new wp kit. Also confirm the severe overheat didn't damage any plastic bits (such as the crankcase vent) on the powerhead.
