velver drive - relief valve causes fluid leak?

I was rafted up next to a guy who has the same Crusader/Velvet drive (straight drive) setup I have in my boat.

He told me about a massive fluid leak he had and wound up pulling the transmission - twice. It turned out the real cause was a $12 "relief valve" (my term) that threads into the top of the transmission that failed.

Can someone tell me exactly what that is? Seems like a good part to have onboard and maybe even proactively change. Mine are '88's with about 900 hours.

thanks
Bob

BW called it the breather...some call it the vent. Threads in on the top, at the rear, where the pressure taps are on the main case. Probably had the spring rust out so there was nothing keeping it closed.

I wouldn't call it a common failure part...having one is your choice. After that story, $12 for piece of mind isn't bad.
