Tohatsu M40C "reed" replacement cost?

Hi Blog,

Can anyone pass on what a Tohatsu service mechanic should charge to replace the reeds and gaskets for a M40C (1994 model yr)?

Thanks,

The motor has idling issues, runs at a higher than normal rpms, up around 900+; just had a new fuel pump installed, the old one was dumping too much fuel into the carb; mechanic believes he has narrowed the reason down to the reeds. Because of the high idling range, it kicks when I put it into gear which is obviously no good for the motor.

Still don't know what a reed and gasket replacement should cost. Any price range ideas?

Thanks.

It depends on the mechanic or the shop rate. Did you have the shop show you the parts replaced and why they were bad. How far did they have to tear it down. Not all shops are honest when it comes to parts and labor. If the work was already done is it running good, a second opinion is never a bad thing and do the research on the shops doing the bids. If the work is already done and your not happy with the outcome go into the showroom and get loud preferrably with alot of potential customers there and demand to talk to the service manager. If it is running good and still unhappy dont go there again. Allways ask to see the bad parts by law they have to show you.

You need a better mechanic. No such thing as a fuel pump that "dumps too much fuel to the carb". Period. VERY doubtful you need reeds. Probably need a good carb cleaning. But start with a mechanic who has a clue, as your present one clearly does not.
