69 chrysler 85hp-engine quits

My 85hp has 3 carbs in it. The manual states the adjustments for low and high speeds are located on the side of the engine. It seems you have to adjust the dist. to a point while in TDC. I have 3 bowls that I will inspect to see if there is clogging there. Some of the wiring looks brittle. I wonder if the wiring under the flywheel is broken and giving off interment spark. What happens is most of the time is starts right off. There is a choke shaft but its not hooked up. I have to take off the lid and pull it up. Most of the time I hotshot it starting fluid in the plugs. When I am operating the engine, it works nice at slow speed, I finally got it idled down as to not create a wake. But the minute I increase the speed it sputters and cuts out completely. Any help on how to adjust this because the book is confusing to me. Perhaps this is beyond my mech ability.
My plugs are gapless types.

Thanks
Paul
