I've been using Champion UL77V or equiv. NGK for years in my engine. I've done a search here and the question of using L77JC4 comes up. I've always been happy with spark plug life (change approx. 50 hrs) but wondered with my use ( 70 percent idle and low speed with very little wide open running) if I should change.

Personally I don't care for the surface gap plugs BUT if you've been enjoying proper performance from your engine by using them, I say stick with them. As the old saying goes.... don't change a winner!

Now, that being said. My preference, and that of OMC's is the Champion QL77JC4 plug, gapped at the original (1973)recommended setting of .040 or the revised setting (of the late 1990's). One gap or the other may provide improved performance at idle or WOT..... It varies from engine to engine. The "Q" indicates a supressor plug that is supposed to quiet ignition and other engine noises that may interfere with electronic/electrical equipment.
