'65 Mercury 55HP Outboard with Oil Seeping

Need advise on why gear oil would be seeping out of the water outtake vents. My 16 yr old son drained the lower unit and attempted to replace the gear oil by putting oil into the filler hole. It gushed out of the water out take vents which seemed like a bad thing. If anyone can give us guidance how we can fix the problem - if it is a problem and it sure looks like one - please let us know. Thanks very much!
 
Thanks. We've flushed the lower unit and have forced the gear oil up from the bottom. Thanks very much for the quick help!
