mid 90's M40c Tohatsu outboard water pump impeller replacement question

Hi all, first time poster and need some assistance. Cranked up my motor this morning (mid 90's M40C Tohatsu) and noticed the water pump wasn't working. Shut it down and flushed it to no avail, still didn't work. The question I have is, how and where do I disconnect the shifting rod so I can slide the lower unit off to replace the impeller? There has to be something simple that I'm just not seeing when I'm looking at it.

Stainless roll pin in the brass coupler that connects the shift rod to the cam rod. Full info is in the Factory service manual, available from any dealer, including me. Don't bother with just the impeller; do the complete kit -- same labor, and the pump will work a lot better, and last longer. Part # 361873220M $72.98.

First, clear the telltale with a stiff wire while the motor is running, just to make sure you don't have a clog there.
