Lower Unit Drive Shaft Question

This link will take you to a video of me moving the drive shaft around while, obviously, the water pump assembly and housing cover are off. Is this "normal" movement?

I'm not sure what year it is, but maybe a '92? It has the two piece drive shaft with the coupler.
 
My mechanic said that the play is normal. The drive shaft raises up when under drive pressure and tightens up and centers when it is pressed up into the motor. So I'm told....

I have the unit laying on its side in the garage to see if any oil leaks out, because it occurred to me that the only time I saw it leaking was when it was in the raised position....
