Overheat Alarm on Mercury 115 Offshore

I've just changed the water pump on my 1997 Mercury 115 Offshore. There isa steady stream of water being pumped through the motor so the impeller is clearly working but the overheat alarm went off after being underway at 1500 rpms for 5 mins. Any suggestions about what to try next? Thanks.

It pumps water but impeller may be worn enough and not providing sufficient pressure at higher RPM. Replace the thermostat and popit valve rubber seal and spring. Look into the water jacket and see if there are heavy mineral deposits in the water jacket. If it still sounds an alarm verify the temp overheat switch is going off at the right temp.
