Idle Variation

How much idle variation do you guys see? What's the concensus on what's considered "normal".

Last week, I installed a newly rebuilt Carter AFB on my stbd 318. While adjusting the air/fuel mix I couldn't get what I felt was a steady idle. Jumped around from 750 to 820.

Granted, the motor isn't getting fully up to temp due to water by-passing my tstat. I'll be taking care of the tstat problem this weekend and trying the air/fuel mix again with the engine fully warmed.

Anyway, what's normal idle variation?

I think you need to get that tstat in before you worry too much about a 70 rpm bounce while cold. That said, once warmed up, these motors can/should hold a pretty smooth idle (assuming stock cams, well-timed, etc.).
