2002 Mercruiser 5.0L, runs great most of day, but later dies and hard to restart

New member, same problem with 94 - 5.o with 2 bbl. Boat starts & idles fine, cruises no problem at lower rpm's all day long but run at high speed (4K + @ 20 mins) when i slow back to idle will not throttle up & wants to die. Can get back at idle speed but no faster. Things done so far: cleaned entire fuel system, rebuild carb, new coil, cap/rotor, plugs. Something in ignition seems to be overheating at high RPM's. Could this be the ignition sensor? Any thought or help would be appreciated.

Note: Here's another case of what I'm often guilty of: zeroing on one area (gas related) while ignoring the other (spark related).
